A Guide to Danish Gin
Tradition meets Nordic terroir — what it means to distil with care in a country where nature itself sets the standard.
Danish gin isn't a copy of anything else. It's an expression of a specific place, a specific attitude, and a deep respect for what grows freely in the Nordic landscape.
01
From Holland to Bornholm
Gin historically has its roots in Holland and Britain, but Denmark quickly found its own path. Danish distillers have worked with Nordic ingredients for generations — not because it was fashionable, but because it simply made good sense. Wild juniper, sea buckthorn, elderflower, and herbs from coast and forest have always belonged in the Danish natural landscape.
The modern wave of Danish craft gin really took off in the 2010s. Today, Danish gin is recognised internationally for its characteristic purity and balance.
02
Terroir, water, and botanical balance
Several things set Danish gin apart from international competition. Denmark — and islands like Bornholm in particular — is home to botanicals (plants and herbs) with an intensity and purity that reflects the Nordic climate.
At Wild Distillery, Bornholm water makes up 70% of the distillation batch. Soft water brings out the finer qualities of the botanical ingredients without drowning them out — that's not just a technical detail, it's the very foundation of the flavour.
The best Danish gin producers work with botanical balance rather than dominance. The Nordic ideal is a gin where every ingredient contributes equally — no single flavour is allowed to take over. Our ENE Organic Gin – Original Dry is our take on this Nordic ideal in its purest form.
Danish gin isn't about imitating London Dry. It's about letting the Nordic terroir speak.
03
What you can actually taste
The concept of terroir comes from the world of wine. In Danish gin, terroir isn't an abstract idea — it's something you can taste.
04
World-class Bornholm craftsmanship
The ENE series is made exclusively from certified organic ingredients. WILD Botanicals Gin is made with wild juniper hand-foraged from Ravnedalen under special permit from the Danish Nature Agency — only 350 bottles are produced each year. Both series represent what Danish gin can be at its very best: pure, precise, and deeply rooted in the place it comes from. See the full gin collection here.
